Google is an American multinational corporation specialising in Internet related services and products.

These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, and software. Firefly is a google partner in Auckland and have put together some interesting facts about Google.

Google’s HQ however is a very fun and interesting place. Here are some fun facts about Google and when they started to where they have come today.

  1. The first Google Image Changed

Google’s homepages are notoriously known for changing daily representing something important happening in the world – usually an anniversary or big world event, but did you know that the very first Google Doodle was designed as a “out of office” message?

  1. Google share price – a worth investment?

Google opened their stock price at $85 per share. They have seen growth of up to 800% and current price is showed above. With the Google share price constantly rising, it could be a logical investment as we see the company move from strength to strength.

  1. Lego Google Storage – 1996

Google’s first storage back in 1996, known as a project called “backrub” showcases a whopping 40 GB. The storage was made from building blocks “LEGO” and using the companies colour today. It’s said LEGO was used as it was a cost effective way to house the 10 x 4 GB hard drives.

  1. Googles First Twitter Post

Google’s first Twitter post was completely in binary. It didn’t take long for people to work out what it read “I’m 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010.” – “I’m Feeling Lucky”

  1. Google rents Goats and chucks out lawnmowers

Google hires goats (approx. 200 goats) to help cut down the amount of weeds it has at Google HQ in America.

Google said it was “A lot cuter to watch than lawn mowers” showcasing the company as an environmentally conscious company.

  1. Google a word?

In 2006 Google was added to the Oxford English Dictionary which isn’t surprising as you hear the saying every day “just Google it”.

  1. Google – A dog friendly company

Google is a super dog-friendly company with several company and staff dogs allowed on campus, unfortunately, we cannot say the same about cats.

Here’s an excerpt taken directly from Google’s Code of Conduct: “Google’s affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture. We like cats, but we’re a dog company, so as a general rule we feel cats visiting our offices would be fairly stressed out.”

  1. Google Bicycle

You may see a few of these on campus as they are made available to staff as means of transport. The Google bicycle is practical and houses the famous Google colours.

  1. Googles Dinosaur!

The Google t-Rex skeleton named Stan” is situated at the Googleplex and was placed after a real dinosaur was found nearby in Mountain View.

There are also large sculptures including a large Lego man, Android themed models and pink flamingos.

  1. Google in the movies

Some of Google’s HQ was showcased on the movie “the internship” giving us all an insight into the office and what it would be like working at Google.
